Digital Project Manager, UM Worldwide
Hello, my name is Julie Compagny and I'm going to tell you about my journey since EM Normandie. As I got to know myself through my travels and my different professional experiences, I understood how important it was to find a balance between my professional and personal life. It is essential to find your way and to give meaning to your daily life. I also talk to you about the importance of the network built up during the first years of the School.
Your career path at EM Normandie
I joined EM Normandie just after my baccalauréat. Of course, it's an incredible experience during the first few years because you discover a "new world". You become completely autonomous. You learn new subjects in class. You meet new people and you start to think about your expatriation destinations.
I chose EM Normandie mainly because I would be able to go abroad. I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living, but I was sure I wanted to go abroad to experience new cultures and improve my language skills. These experiences allowed me to discover who I am, what I want in life, what my dreams are and what I aspire to.
Discovering the media sector
I discovered the media world during my optional year between 4th and 5th year. I got this opportunity thanks to a friend of mine from the School who had interviewed at a media agency and who pushed my profile to this company. That's how I discovered the media world and got involved in this field.
Initially, working in the media makes you understand the impact it has on your life, the role it can play in all your decisions. It's quite impressive to discover that the choices we make when we go to the media are driven by algorithms.
I was later contacted again by the same agency for a job proposal. I was still wondering at this stage if this was the job for me although I had loved my internship and especially the people I had worked with. I finally decided to deepen my knowledge in the media field and to become more professional. It's an industry that is always changing and you learn new things every day.
To this day, I am not convinced that I will spend my whole career in the media, but I found it a good way to start my career.
An exciting job
What I like most about my job as a digital coordinator is the coordination aspect. As a student, I liked all the subjects I studied in class, especially management. As a project manager, I do a lot of cross-functional management. I am in contact with all the teams on a daily basis. It's very challenging because you have to adapt to everyone and find the right way to approach people.
I really appreciate the trust and autonomy that I am given. I also took this job because I like the person who recruited me and who is now my manager. She is an incredible person!
The relationship to work
Work has always been an important part of my life. When I was younger, I knew that my professional career would take precedence over my private life.
Through my experiences in companies, I understood the importance of finding a balance between who you are and what you do in life, of finding a balance between your professional and personal life. Given the amount of time you spend at work, it's essential to find your way around every day and to get up in the morning motivated by your tasks.
I don't think I could work in a company where I didn't feel fully useful and fulfilled in my work.
Having a work ethic
There are many ways to deal with the fact that your work is not in line with your values.
In my agency, there have been times when an advertisement was too stereotypical in my opinion. I felt the need to express my opinion even though, at my level, I can't bang my fist on the table and absolutely refuse these choices. Nevertheless, I have this reflex to analyse things.
Moreover, there are several of us in the team who are young and involved in societal and environmental issues. It's quite reassuring to be on the same wavelength and to move the company in the right direction.
Enjoy and maintain your network at EM Normandie
I still have links with several students I met during my studies as well as with a professor who is now one of my best friends.
Having a network has always been very important to me. I believe that within the school network we can all rely on each other. I recently received an email from a student offering his services to work in my company. I was delighted to receive this offer.
It's quite funny to see former students of the School again because it's like we went to war together! We can share experiences from the School that make sense to everyone. Everything we learned during our studies remains and is useful to us all. In everything we do, we have that EM Normandy "touch" that comes back.
It's important to see that we are all part of the same community and that we can count on each other if necessary.
