What is Supply Chain management?

Supply chain management basically refers to the process of ensuring an effective flow of goods from their point of origin till they reach their final destination. The main aim of this process is to meet customer requirements while reducing costs and improving efficiency. It involves managing various activities such as production planning, inventory management, logistics etc., which are carried out by different departments within an organisation.

In international trade, supply chain management (SCM) is the management of the flow of goods and services. This activity encompasses the design, planning, execution, control and monitoring of supply chain activities in order to create value: transforming raw materials into finished products between companies and locations. It also consists of synchronising supply with demand and of measuring performance on a global basis.

The supply chain manager coordinates all parts of the supply chain, from raw material procurement to product delivery, striving to minimise total costs and taking into account constraints throughout the chain. Indeed, some conflicts may exist between sale departments and warehouses that do not have the same objectives to fulfil.
