School for Good

At EM Normandie, social responsibility is not a side issue: it is an integral part of our strategy, our teaching and campus life.

Our ambition is to gradually transform the School into a true School for Good, committed to supporting ecological, social and societal transitions.

This approach is built around three aspects:

• Campus for Good: reducing our impact and changing our practices;
• Knowledge for Good: training experts in dealing with major environmental, social and societal challenges;
• People for Good: creating an inclusive, respectful and caring environment.

Campus for Good

Ambition

Transforming campuses to reduce their environmental impact, protect biodiversity and actively contribute to the ecological and social transitions in their local areas.

In action

To lead this transformation, EM Normandie relies on a Campus Steering Committee made up of experts on major environmental issues. It meets every two months to coordinate, monitor and support the initiatives undertaken.

Reducing our environmental impact

EM Normandie is taking action to reduce its carbon emissions and bring about sustainable change in its practices in terms of transport, energy consumption, food, procurement and digital technology.

• Carbon assessment report in 2022 and 2026;
• Commitment to a carbon reduction pathway aligned with the Paris Agreement and the national low-carbon strategy;
• Implementation of a business transformation plan with several initiatives underway:
• Introduction of the Sustainable Mobility Allowance since 2023;
• Awarded the ‘Objectif Employeur Pro Vélo’ label in 2025 for the three french campuses;
• Awareness-raising initiatives on sustainable mobility (May by Bike, workshops, information stands and repair kits);
• Implementation of a responsible travel policy;
• Use of a fleet of ‘full hybrid’ cars;
• Appointment of a ‘SDG Mobility Ambassador’ and a ‘Cycling Ambassador’ on each campus;
• Aim to reduce gas and electricity consumption by 3.6% per year until 2030 through concrete measures (automatic switching off of lights, reducing heating to 19°, raising awareness of eco-friendly habits, etc.);
• Energysaving agreements signed with service providers, monitored by EM Normandie’s Energy Manager;
• Systematic consideration of sustainable development and social responsibility issues in purchasing;
• Extending the lifespan of IT equipment and using refurbished hardware;
• Organisation of an annual Digital Clean-up Day to reduce data storage and electronic waste;

Preserving natural resources and biodiversity

EM Normandie is taking concrete action to better integrate biodiversity issues into the management of its campuses.

• Conducting biodiversity assessments;
• Implementing a greening plan;
• Managing green areas without the use of chemical pesticides;
• Taking part in clean-up walks with local organisations;
• Vegetarian options available in catering facilities;
• Weekly distribution of fruit and vegetable boxes sourced from local suppliers;
• Raising awareness of sustainable eating and reducing food waste;

Taking action at a local level

EM Normandie contributes to local efforts towards ecological and social transition in collaboration with local stakeholders.

• Hosting the Business Convention for the Climate;
• Organising the Meetings of Sustainable Development Representatives of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles in 2026;
• Our campuses in Le Havre and Caen have held the ‘Agir Ensemble’ (Act Together) certification since 2024.

Knowledge for Good

Our ambition

To train professionals capable of understanding major environmental and societal challenges and of acting responsibly in their future careers.

In action

Through its Knowledge for Good pillar, EM Normandie integrates SD&CSR issues into its programmes, supports its teaching staff in developing their skills, and conducts research focused on the major contemporary transitions.

Integrating SD&SR issues into the curriculum

• Gradual integration of the skills set out in the DEFM’s SD&SR framework into Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes:
  • Responsible Project: CSR strategy consultancy assignments for businesses;
  • Course on Sustainable Business Strategy, focusing on economic models compatible with planetary boundaries;
  • Course on Transitions, Governance and Territories, dedicated to transition challenges at the local level;
• Participation in the Sulitest initiative to assess new students’ knowledge of sustainable development;
• Implementation of the international TASK™ certification scheme;

Supporting the professional development of professors-researchers

• Roll-out of a sustainable development, diversity, equity and social responsibility (SD&SR) training programme for professors-researchers;
• Organisation of interdisciplinary workshops to encourage the sharing of expertise;

Developing high-impact research

• Establishment of a research ethics committee;
• Promotion of case studies relating to ecological and social transitions;
• Annual awards recognising innovation in teaching and research;

People for Good

Our ambition

To make every campus an inclusive, respectful and caring environment, where everyone can study, work and thrive in the best possible conditions.

In action

EM Normandie takes action to prevent high-risk situations, promote inclusion and support its entire community.

Prevention and protection

• Prevention workshops and information stands organised across all campuses;
• Raising awareness of gender-based and sexual violence, harassment, discrimination and addictive behaviours;
• Organisation of Wellbeing and Prevention Week;
• STOP Harassment platform, enabling confidential reporting of incidents of violence, discrimination or harassment;

Promoting equality and inclusion

• Organisation of Equality Action Week;
• Raising awareness amongst teaching staff on supporting people with disabilities;

Fostering an engaged community

• Training committed students – the ‘Care Teams’ – in first aid, the prevention of gender-based and sexual violence, and harm reduction at social events;
• Working together with student societies and the Students’ Federation to strengthen prevention and awareness-raising initiatives across the entire student community;
• Co-ordinating the Diversiteam, made up of committed staff members, focusing on disability, gender equality and intercultural understanding.
• Developing a culture of active listening, respect and collective responsibility.

 

A recognised approach

SD&SR Master Plan 2025–2030

Approved by the Board of Trustees and submitted to the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the SD&SR Master Plan serves as the roadmap for our approach.

It sets out our objectives, monitoring indicators and priorities for action for the coming years.

SD&SR Label

Since 2023, EM Normandie has been participating in the national SD&SR labelling scheme.

This framework enables us to assess our practices, identify opportunities for improvement and anchor our commitment to a process of continuous improvement.

PRME

EM Normandie is also a signatory to the PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education) programme, an initiative of the United Nations Global Compact.

In 2025, the School published its report ‘Sharing Information on Progress’ and was awarded ‘Communicating on Progress’ status, in recognition of the transparency and progress of its efforts towards more responsible management.
